Go Play In Traffic

Have you ever been hit by a car?

I have.

And I have the brain damage scars to prove it.

When I got hit by a car, I was almost the same age as my youngest child is today.

Six.

And at the time, it didn’t seem like it was such a big deal.

Even now, I joke about how my mom told me to “go play in traffic” and I didn’t want to disobey, so…

But that isn’t really what happened.

What really happened isn’t very glamorous at all.

In fact, it might not be too far of a stretch to say it could make the dumb-move-hall-of-fame.

I was hit by an F-150 truck in 1976 on a road with exactly one truck on it.

The one that hit me.

And it was driven by a teenager.

I spent the better part of the next few years in-and-out of the hospital getting lots of plastic surgery done.

Before plastic surgery was cool.

Which can only mean one of two things:

  1. I move slow
  2. I am tougher than I look

But for now I think I will stick by my story where my mom told me to go play in traffic.

It is always fun to see the look on people’s face when I tell them that is what happened.

That’s great man! My Mom used to buy Jack Daniels for me and my friends when I was 14. I guess neither of them were very PC according to today’s standards.
