Wow, this brings back some memories. We lived in Troy, Idaho and had the same 'getting ready for winter' routine for years. Though I was fortunate enough to never have your experience, spending that time with my dad learning his views and ideas on life were something for which I will always be thankful. I learned as much about who he was as I did about hard work and taking care of a family and those you care about. I can't count how many cords of wood I have hauled, split and stacked.

I also like the quote from Stephen Covey as I was reminded of it once again in December by a friend. It was his first of three pieces of advice that were given to him by a friend and that he shared with me. His second and third were..

Always approach a situation from a 'needless' point of view. If you let outside needs into your decision making or only look at what you are going to gain, you may very well make the decision for the wrong reason(s). I recognize this can be challenging to do, but it's a good thing to keep in mind.

And lastly, God's grace is always 'in time'. It may not be as soon as we like or we may wonder why it hasn't come yet, but it is always perfectly timed. Rather than worrying about things out of our control, have faith that you need will present itself when it is most needed.

Sorry for the long comment, but I really enjoyed the post. Thanks.
